Restaurant Review: Pho Golden Bowl, Manchester, NH

 Pho Golden Bowl, Manchester, NH
After ten days with my mother in Atlanta, Georgia, I flew in to Logan Airport in Boston and had Andy pick me up. His one condition upon getting me was that we find and stop for Pho soup on the way home. As you may or may not know, where we live in Vermont is not all that known for having a lot of ethnic foods and we just moved from Northern Virginia, where there are a LOT of different flavors being represented. We have not had Pho soup in almost a year... and that was no fun. It used to be a weekly occurrence for us.

Andy found Pho Golden Bowl online and planned out our route from the airport to the restaurant. It was a little building on a corner with parking out back and on the road beside it. It was pretty full when we got there and we were a bit thrown when we walked around the front to go in and there was a note to use the back entrance...

Once inside a woman told us it would be 5 minutes, but there were tables empty so I think she was just being lazy because a younger man sat us almost immediately after she told us 5min and helped us the rest of the time we were there.

We all got Pho; I always just get noodles in beef broth and Andy likes the Pho Tai Nam, which is Pho with steak. I have to admit that it was very good and after not having it for so long I think we will take the hour drive there to have it again.

The price was the norm for Pho, in my opinion (About $7-8) and we were happy to find that the restaurant accepted credit cards which many Pho places we have tried do not.

Overall I think that this was a great Pho experience and I am excited to see what other wonderful places Manchester, NH has for us to visit.

Restaurant Review: Sushi Boat, Manchester, VT

Sushi Boat, Manchester Center, VT

I found this place a few weeks prior while my stepmother and I were on the hunt for a nail place that is open on Sundays  (FYI no luck finding one :/). She mentioned that she had heard good things about Sushi Boat but hated fish so I should try it at some point, so on the 4th of July I dragged my husband down to it. It was open normal hours even though it was a holiday, so that was nice.

We walked in and were greeted by a lady behind the counter and told to sit anywhere… and then we sat… and sat… and sat… finally Andy grabbed a menu for us to at least read through. By the time the woman came over with water we knew what we wanted. So service –wise there was a lot to be desired.

To make up for that though, the food came out very quickly. We ordered a Philadelphia Roll – your standard salmon, cream cheese and cucumber; a Fire Cracker  roll - a spicy tuna roll with tempura crunchies on the outside; and a Red Dragon roll – a spicy tuna with more tuna on top. Obviously we are fans of the spic tuna and its variations but this was our first time out so we had to go with our normal choices first.

The rolls were all beautiful and like I mentioned came out quickly. The rice was a lot better than a few places we had already tried, Yama in West Lebanon, NH, the pre-made at Price Chopper etc. The rice was a bit overdone for my liking but it is better than crunchy, so better than the other places. The tuna was a good quality from what we could tell, it tasted wonderful. I was hoping for more heat in the spicy tuna but it was good. The Fire Cracker tempura crunch on the outside was a great addition to the texture of the roll; it helped with the squishy rice.

Later during the meal we were offered tea and that made my day, even though it was warm out the tea was Jasmine and it was very refreshing and steeped very well. I love teas….
Price-wise, what we chose were on the more expensive end of the menu, we paid about $35 for the 3 rolls. At the end of our meal we got up to pay and the chef rung us up, he was very nice and polite. They were good sushi for VT; I think that we may go back to this place.

Vermont Eats

It has been a year since we moved to the beautiful Green Mountain State of Vermont, we have had some time to settle in, buy a house, figure out jobs and all the normal stuff, but now it is time for the important things – the food! Where is it hidden? How do we find it?

So this is our adventure in food, it won’t only be places in Vermont, as we do like to try to travel, but this is what we think of the places we visit. We are not food reviewers get anyone’s attention; we are just compiling a list of the places we loved and the ones that were just ok.

Are you a Vermonter? A New Englander? Where should we eat?
